Quantifying Your Resume: Numbers Matter

When applying for a job, many factors make a big difference, including the numbers you use on your job resume. In short, people are very number-oriented. This means that they are interested in learning what you have to offer in the way of job skills and work experience, but they want to know how you rate against other people. It is not always easy to do that especially if your previous job experience is not in a management position. Nevertheless, there are plenty of ways to quantify your resume.
How to Quantify Your Resume
Look for numbers that help to show what you have accomplished and incorporate those into your resume. This may be easier to do than you realize, though. For example, as a sales manager, you can easily talk about the figures related to the sales you helped to make. Did you see an increase in sales any of the years you were there? Did you, personally, increase your sales from one year to the next? Determine the percentage or the dollar amount of increase and include those numbers in your job resume. This is just as important as the job experience and job skills you gained in those positions.

To further quantify your resume, look for other numbers that represent the improves or achievements not only you achieved but that the company did while you were working there. Perhaps you worked as a factory worker on a machine. It may not seem like it is possible to quantify your resume in this way, but you can. For example, you may talk about the multi-million project the plant had while you were there. Discuss piece work accomplishments. Use percentages whenever possible because these can be more impressive than just using basic figures.
Try to focus on improvements whenever possible. When your company improved and you were there to help make it happen, that is a big deal and something that every hiring manager is going to pay attention to when you are applying for a job.
When applying for a job, focus on what you accomplished at your previous positions, not just what your job skills are or what your work experience is. The more ways you can apply numbers to your job resume, the more likely it will be that your resume will gain attention. You want more than just a job interview, but an opportunity to show the company how you can help them to accomplish improvements, too.
